Augmentin (Amoxicillin + Clavulanate)
Usage indications
Augmentin is a penicillin class antibiotics. It fights bacteria in organism. Augmentin is used for the treatment of various infections type. Augmentin is used for the treatment of such infections as tonsillitis, pneumonia, ear infections, bronchitis, urination ways infections, gonorrhea, skin infections. It can be used for other diseases treatment as well.
Application mode
Augmentin can be in capsules, chewing pills, liquid or drops for oral intake. As a rule, it should be taken every 8 hours (3 times a day). Strictly follow instruction manual or consult your doctor or pharmaceutist in case you have any questions on this drug intake. Shake liquid or drops to provide the drug even mixing. Use bottle with measuring signs for making children dosage. Children can take pediatric drops or liquid by tongue or take them added to children food, fruit juices, milk, water, ginger ale or other cold liquids. Take these liquids immediately right after mixing with pills. The pills should be thoroughly squashed or chewed before swallowing. Swallow capsules full and wash them down with the full glass of water. Continue taking Augmentin even if you feel better. Do not stop taking Augmentin without prior consultation with your doctor.
Drug class and mechanism of action
Augmentin is a penicillin class antibiotic. It effectively fights such bacteria as H. flue, gonorrhea, enteric bacillus, pneumococcus and some strains of staphylococcus. It is tightly connected chemically with penicillin and ampicillin. The add-on of clavulanic acid to amoxicillin at Augmentin increase this antibiotic efficiency in fighting other bacteria, resistant to amoxicillin.
Missed doses
During single miss of doze Augmentin intake it is necessary to take the doze as soon as possible. If the time of missed doze intake corresponds to the time of next doze intake the drug intake should be missed. The double dosage is prohibited for intake unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor.
Storage
Keep away from children, sources of heat and direct sun lights. Do not store Augmentin capsules or pills at bathroom near kitchen sink or other wet places as heat and humidity can cause this drug destruction. Store liquid Augmentin in the fridge as the heat might negatively influence the drug. Strictly follow instruction manual. Do not keep unnecessary or old drugs. Make sure to keep thrown drugs away from children.
Warnings/ precautions
Do not take Augmentin without prior consultation with your doctor if you are allergic to penicillin or other cefalosporine. Inform your doctor on kidney, stomach or intestinal diseases. Augmentin is approved by FDA for the usage during pregnancy. This means that it will not be harmful for future kid. Any way be sure to consult with your doctor on the intake of Augmentin during pregnancy or plans to get pregnant during treatment. Augmentin is absorbed by mother milk. Sometimes Augmentin can incur yeasty infection, diarrhea or allergic reaction of infant. Do not take this drug when doing breast feeding without prior consultation with your doctor.
Possible side effects
Be sure to contact your doctor immediately if you have significant bloody diarrhea or stomach spasms during Augmentine intake. If any of the aforementioned effects occur stop Augmentine intake and contact your doctor immediately:
- allergic reaction (breathing difficulties; breathing ways contractions; nettle rash, lips, face or tongue edema, rash or loss of consciousness); attacks, unusual bleeding or haematoma.
Other less serious side effects might occur as well. Continue taking Augmentine and consult with your doctor in case if you feel slight vomiting, nausea or stomach pains, white film on your tongue, vaginal thrush, black hairy tongue, mouth or tongue bruises. Other side effects not listed here might occur as well. Consult with your doctor on any side effects which might seem unusual or irritating.
Additional information
Consult your doctor immediately and stop Augmentine and potassium clavulanate intake in case if any of the following serious side effects arise:
- allergic reactions( breathing difficulties, breathing ways contractions, nettle rash, lips, face or tongue edema, fainting), heavy diarrhea.
Other less serious side effects might occur. Continue taking Augmentine and potassium clavunate and consult with your doctor in case if you feel slight vomiting, nausea or stomach pains, white film on your tongue, vaginal thrush, black hairy tongue, mouth or tongue bruises.
