Drug Uses
Prevacid is a proton pump inhibitor which prevents the stomach from producing excessive acids and is used to treat symptoms of GERD, stomach ulcers and erosive esophagitis. Prevacid is prescribed for people suffering from heartburn who are unable to get rid of the problem with dietary changes.
Mode of Application
Prevacid comes in two different forms. One is the regular version and the other is the delayed release. The pill may be swallowed whole with a glass of water without breaking or crushing it. People who have trouble swallowing the capsule may break it open, sprinkle the contents on a table spoon and take it with applesauce and swallow it immediately. The granules should not be crushed.
Missed Dosage
If you miss a dose of Prevacid then you may take it as soon as you remember and adjust the remaining doses accordingly. However, if it is nearly time for the next dose then you may skip this dose and continue with the regular dosage. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed dose.
Overdose
Seek medical attention immediately if you suspect an overdose.
Storage
Store at room temperature between 59-86 F (15-30 C). Do not store in the room with high humidity as a bathroom.
Precautions
Discuss with your doctor about any prior medical condition that you may have including allergies to medicines, food or other substances. You may require an altered dosage or constant monitoring while using the drug if you have any liver disease.
The drug is in the FDA Pregnancy category B.
If you are pregnant or suspect that you are, then stop using Prevacid and contact your doctor immediately to discuss the risk to the fetus while using the medication.
It is unknown whether Prevacid is secreted in breast milk. Avoid breast feeding while using the drug.
Side Effects
Some of the common side effects of are an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips/tongue/face, or hives), diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness or headache.
